Hair Loss Life Gain explained!

Cheers!  I do love a glass of the fizzy stuff! Not cheap fizzy wine I hasten to add!

If you are new to my blog or website, please allow me to introduce myself! My name is Laura, I am the founder of www.hairlosslifegain.co.uk (Life Gain Ltd) and www.mindbodylifegain.com

I am an Alopecia survivor, for over 20 years!  I use the word survivor as opposed to Alopecia sufferer, as I do not think that word applies to me anymore, and that also can be the same for you!

I want to help you feel liberated, beautiful and empowered! You can feel that way by having hair that you can be proud of, not self conscious of.  I want you to experience some of the freedom that I now experience because I no longer worry if people can tell that I have alopecia, or if they can tell that I am wearing a Hair Replacement System! In fact the hair I have now is better than before!

The secret behind great Hair Replacement is firstly the quality of the lace used, I use swiss and french lace for the front, which gives the undetectable illusion.  Be wary of ultra cheap HRS's as they invariably may use poor quality lace.  The real jewel in the crown, quite literally, is the beautiful hair that is attached.  Do you want hair that is still going to look fab 8 months down the line, or hair that will dry out and fall out after 3 months?  The hair quality I use is devine to touch and exudes quality and premium, even if quite frankly the price does not reflect it, please do not mistake my competitive price for lack in quality.  The truth is that the systems that are priced above £1000-£1500 are massively over priced, the only exception to this is genuine virgin european hair.  Honest pricing is in the £100's, I should know because I used the same manufacturer as the big companies, the only difference may be that they have a plush studio.

The next secret to fabulous HRS is also largely attributed to the design process, plus the time and care taken to get it right.  I will talk you through and will help you choose the right hair type, density, hair line and hair colour.   I will also take the time to run through any concerns or questions you may have.  My responses will always be from the perspective as a wearer/client myself, so you can be rest assured to have open and honest information, about the positives and negatives, to make sure that this is right for you.

If you are new to Hair Replacement, I want to highlight some of the added simple, yet important bonuses you can expect, compared to traditional wigs or covering your hair loss.  Firstly, the base is thin and breathable, often made of lace that is custom made to fit you like a glove, then securely attached.  This allows you to play sports and try out extreme activities without fear of your hair coming off.  More importantly, during these activities you will not feel any hotter than someone with hair, as the base is porous, enabling sweat to escape onto the hair not trapped underneath making it uncomfortably hot for you.  This is a major benefit as most wigs can feel very hot and for some itchy.

There is something very liberating feeling the wind actually hit your scalp, helping you cool down and feel like this is your old hair.  Having hair replacement takes away the fear you may have about the weather.  I know that I used to dread windy days, often declining social engagements or not going to work on particularly bad days.  You will not need to worry about this with a HRS, as your hair will be securely adhered, challenging the elements not the other way around.  Having that security helps you take up activities that may have previously not been an option, or go on holidays that you may have avoided.  A massive breakthrough for me was being able to go into the sea, without fear of my hair falling off, and then lie on a beach bed even with people directly behind me. It felt so amazing just doing the things that ‘with hair’ people take for granted in daily life.

Above all for me, the thing I loved most was just the simple ability to get up in the morning with hair, even bed hair, and just get ready like anyone else would.  Not stressing about my baldness or my failed, inconsistent attempts at covering it.  The HRS will take away many daily struggles so that you can concentrate on other things not just your hair! If you want to look and feel normal like everyone else, then this is your answer! You quickly forget you are even wearing one, as you can’t actually feel anything, it is truly amazing!

So where can you find me?  I am based in Battersea (South West London), or alternatively I can offer home visits in London and the South East.

What I also offer in addition to my experience with Hair Replacement Systems, is some extra emotional support!  Inspired by my own experience with a Life Coach and amazing results I experienced with a Complementary Therapist, I had the passion and life purpose calling to train myself, which is exactly what I did! I wanted others to experience the breakthroughs and transformations that inspired me to leave a very well paid job and start my own business.  The Coaching and Complementary Therapy I practice, is not traditional counselling or therapy. I found that these techniques achieved faster and more powerful results. Combined, they enabled me to get it all out, whilst also giving me strategies and tools to move on and change, which is something I felt was lacking from counselling. I was so blown away that I subsequently trained and qualified in both modalities, so that I could share some of the brilliant transformations I experienced, particularly after my traumatic 3rd Alopecia re-lapse 4 years ago.

My techniques can work for you, whether you are new to Alopecia and are finding it hard to come to terms with, or you have had Alopecia for many years.  You may no longer be upset about your Alopecia, but you still have that underlying feeling that your life could be better.  Perhaps you are not entirely happy with your relationships, career, health or you have dreams and goals that you feel you will never achieve.  Perhaps you may feel that it’s just too late, or that your alopecia prevents you from fulfilling the things in life you would really love to do.

If you are letting Alopecia hold you back in those areas, you are playing it safe, and keeping yourself protected, perhaps from either being exposed; from failing; or you are worried about what others may think.   Do you want to spend your life regretting or looking back?  Alopecia may have been a great reason or excuse not to do the things that deep down you would love to do, but that can change!

Change starts when you look at your beliefs both positive and negative.  A great quote I love is ‘Whether you believe you can or you can’t, you are right’.  The negative beliefs come to you in the form of your inner critic voice; this voice gives you advice, reminds you of the times things went wrong or you failed, it reels off endless facts (usually false) about who you are as a person, your capability, tells you how others perceive you, or how significant or insignificant you are in your personal and professional life.  It creates FEAR.  Fear can also stand for False Evidence Appearing Real.  Fear can hold us back from taking action and prevent us from living the life we want, because we don’t believe we deserve it or can do it due to the knock backs we’ve experienced with our Alopecia.

The Fears and limiting beliefs  have kept you from action and doing the things that inspire you; keeping you playing safe and small.   They have kept you wrapped in barbed wire not cotton wool, so are very destructive.  How many missed opportunities can you recall?  How many of them have been as a result of your Alopecia?  That is why working with a coach like me, helps you recognise how you have been playing it safe and limiting yourself, but also gives you the strategies and encouragement to change and start playing it big!  Embracing the new qualities you have directly as a result of your Alopecia; qualities like resilience, strength and courage.

I’ll help to transform you into a new person inside and out! I can show you how, and will teach you the tools you need, so that you can have them for life and be your own coach!

I want to help you grow as a person, even if your hair doesn’t!

Not looking back!

I came across a CD the other day, which had some old photos on.  I was surprised to find a photo of the day I let go of the strands of hair I so desperately clung to for many years.  The day I went into Hair Replacement is still firmly etched into my mind, I can still remember the feelings I felt, the thoughts I had leading up to it and the huge sense of relief I felt.

I finally decided to have a hair replacement system, when my already wispy and fine hair that I attached hair extensions onto, was falling out at a rapid rate.  I knew I had a month or so left before I would no longer have any hair to extend to.

I had already researched into HRS a few years prior, however always thought that I wouldn't go through with it unless I was desperate.  In retrospect I held myself back from a few years of stress free living and freedom.  Had I known what I know now, I could have chosen a partial HRS that would just cover my bald patches on top and still kept my side hair and back hair, instead of having extensions that actually hurt, took ages to attach and still didn't leave me with a look I was happy with.

I digress! So as you can see on the photo, the date is 20th December 2007....the day I took the brave step to shaving my head and wearing a HRS that would make me feel amazing, look great and shoot my confidence through the roof!

Whilst my smile in the photo was 100% genuine, the weeks leading up to it were full of trepidation; I was anxious; scared and excited all rolled into one.  On one hand I knew I didn't have a choice, but on the other I felt I was deliberately getting rid of my hair, was I mad?! I held onto those strands like gold for years, now here I am shaving it!  I was also very nervous because day's later I would be seeing someone special who was coming over from Dubai especially to stay with me, I was so nervous about what he would think and knew that if it looked terrible I had no way out of getting out of seeing him.

If you are reading this and are a little worried about the prospect of shaving your head just to have a HRS, please let me put your mind at rest.  You do not need to shave, in fact I recommend that my clients take  a little time to get used to wearing the system with their remaining hair underneath until they get to a place of 'Sod it! get rid of what's left' or blend your hair with the system hair.  I shaved because there just wasn't enough hair to warrant keeping it, as you can see from the bin photo.

The day I left with my new hair was the day my life changed, after 18 years of shamefully covering my bald patches and letting life pass me by due to my insecurities and fears surrounding my hair.  I felt like a huge boulder had been lifted.  My freedom and happiness was not felt instantly, it took a few weeks before I fully felt the benefits.  My first fear was 'can people tell?' This was no different to the thought I had every day whilst I wore hair extensions.  This time however, I chose to believe that NO people couldn't tell.  I say chose, because it is your choice to believe or not to believe.  No matter how many times someone tells you that it looks like your hair and no one can tell, at the end of the day it boils down to you choosing to see the evidence i.e no one is staring at you, in order to come to your own conclusion that no one can tell.  That is the first milestone to normality, it actually feels pretty amazing the day you believe it and see it.  I felt this cheeky smile inside knowing that I was fooling everyone.  It felt even more amazing when people actually complimented my beautiful long brown hair!  Wow they really can't tell! would be my instant thougt.

The next milestones are the series of tests and challenges you set yourself with your hair, trying to find out for yourself if the claims of the hair replacement companies are really true.  Most of them are true, however there are some limitations, at the end of the day it is not your natural hair, it would be naive to expect it to be just like before.  However as you get used to your new hair you will start to enjoy the activities and experiences that your hair loss may have previously held you back from.

I wrote a diary 3 years ago about my new experiences with hair, which I will share over the course of a few blogs.  For me it was all very novel and exciting because I haven't had a natural full head of hair since I was 10, so I actually cannot remember what it is like.

I love not being fearful of the wind, holidays, sports and meeting new people and I cried the day I drove a convertible car with my hair blowing free!  You don't realise just how much Alopecia denies you in life, until you start to re-experience things or perhaps experience things for the first time. Very liberating and beautiful I can assure you.

If you are contemplating a HRS that is semi-permanently attached rather than a traditional wig that comes off at night, and are full of questions, concerns or worry, please do call me or email me with your questions.  I will happily help you to make an informed decision whether it is right for you.  Alternatively if you have a system on order, waiting for your hair and need some support with the transition also contact me.

I can also give you some very practical self-help techniques that will help to prepare you and help you feel less worried.

This blog is actually quite a poignant moment too, as I have never shown myself without hair!! (there are pics on my article, when I was a kid and one with some hair just before I shaved. Not completely bald however!  So I am quite proud that I feel ready to be completely open.  It is all in preparation for some professional photos that myself and the Heroines: Aimee and Emma are about to have in 2 weeks time!  I can't wait, I'm sure it will feel quite liberating.

One last note, I will never be a bald and proud girl that doesn't wear hair.  I love to look feminine and glamourous.  I admire the strength of women who can bare all like Gail porter, however it is not something that I feel I need to put myself through.  For me happiness is blending in with everyone, feeling normal, looking and feeling fabulous!!

Do you miss the pre-hair loss you?

This is a subject I find comes up time and time again when I talk to my clients.  They say things like 'I miss how I used to look, I miss the old me with hair'

This is all part of the grief process and is entirely natural to ache and long for your old full head of hair and the way you once looked.  It is natural to think thoughts of 'if only I knew I was going to lose it, perhaps I would have cherished my hair more; cherished my carefree nature, when I didn't worry about wind or social situations; I would even cherish my bad hair days.

Lets face it if we knew we were going to lose it I think we would never have used straightener's, hair dye, chemicals we probably wouldn't dare brush it unless it was a golden brush!  Excuse my humour here, I just want to highlight how it doesn't matter how many 'if only's' you have when you reminisce about your hair, you can't change the past and you certainly can't predict your future with or without hair.

The odd fleeting thought about your old hair is healthy and natural, my concern is when it becomes an obsession.  That obsession sometimes also extends to striving to be the same person you once were, in terms of personality and behaviour.  It saddens me as some people hold themselves back in their overall emotional recovery from hair loss (Alopecia), in that they compare themselves now to who they once were.  They see it as almost impossible to get back all of the strengths and qualities they once had.  This make it very daunting and also means that they are putting rules on the levels of happiness they can experience today.  I hear it time and time again, where someone will not be happy unless they could rewind the clock and be who they once were.

It is very easy to see the world through rose tinted glasses, just like how when a bad relationship ends, some months or years later when you look back, you only seem to see the good things about that person or relationship.  For me it seems similar to hair, perhaps your life wasn't fantastic, it was ok but by no means amazing just because you had hair.  Now that you do have hair loss, perhaps all you can see is how brilliant your life once was and compare it to how crap it is today.

When I coach my clients, my aim is never to get back to the 'old pre hair loss you' - that is not productive.  Why is it so pointless you may ask?  Mainly because, if you have reached a place of acceptance for your hair loss it is all about re-invention and moving forward.  You are not the same person you were before, you are BETTER!!  Trying to go back is actually preventing you from evolving and from true transformation.

Change and re-invention is so much easier for us with Alopecia, because our hair loss was thrust on us, it was not out of choice.  Just how redundancy, relationship break ups, natural disasters etc change our lives in a split second, we have no choice but to change direction in order to survive.  Of course at first it is very scary but it can also be the catalyst for something very special and exciting.

In order to see how moving forward can be so rewarding for you, you need to see how far you have come and how much you have evolved since you first started losing your hair.

An exercise that can be quite revealing is to compare the two sides of you today compared to before you had hair loss.  You can choose to be or have anything, so if you had positive qualities that you feel would empower you today, then those are the qualities that you are going to get back.  However some of the less desirable parts of yourself can be left behind.

The point is to recognise your new strengths and things that you can be grateful.

Here are mine:

  • I am a kinder and more thoughtful person
  • I am grateful that I can use my experience to help others
  • I do not take health or my appearance for granted
  • I have a huge amount of resilience!  Nothing could be as bad as losing my hair, therefore I can take on any challenge that life throws at me.
  • I see the best in people
  • I recognise my inner beauty even without all of my hair

Isn't it time that you started looking forward?  There are solutions out there to make you look better and feel normal.  What is not so easy is to change the way you think about yourself or your hair or to be hopeful about the future.

Life Coaching can support you and help you to re-invent yourself, taking tiny steps forward and hopefully not too many back.

Love and hugs

No more pencilling my eye brows!!

I am a very very happy lady right now!  Thanks to the marvellous new eye brows that I have had tattooed with Semi-permanent make up, last Thursday 5th of May.

I was a model at the prestigious Karen Betts Nouveau Contour training academy in Milton Keynes.  The whole experience was fabulous from start to finish.

I was accompanied by one other Alopecia lady, we were both worked on by two experienced Semi Permanent artists, that wanted to extend their training working with Alopecia sufferers, which is obviously a lot different from their normal clientelle.

I had Claire Hobson http://www.clairehobson.co.uk/ and Thea Pearce from Unique finish, who both worked meticulously for well over an hour, just experimenting with different shapes and styles.  It was actually quite nice having two people's perspective, as it gave me the opportunity to say 'I like that part of your brow and I like that bit of yours'.

The result was my perfect brows! Which I envisioned and have attempted several times to pencil in myself.  Once I was completely happy, they took one brow each and got to work.

I felt very relaxed and didn't feel any pain, just a sensation which wasn't unpleasant at all.  In fact it was quite nice to lie down and relax, letting them get on with it.

Voila!  Here they are!  I am so very very happy with them, and didn't want thin and unassuming brows.  I wanted big and bold!  That's what I got.

Writing this, it is now 4 days since I had them done, and I am noticing them fading slightly, and also the pigment seems to be peeling.

I have been assured that this is normal and that I may need up to 3 top ups, this is normal for Alopecia.

I am therefore looking forward to having them topped up shortly.

My Nouveau Contour experience was further topped with some great false eye lashes; applied by Claire, as you can see in this pic!  So thank you Claire they looked great, in preparation for my date that evening!

I will end this blog on my final thought and that is that I can't believe I have not done this years ago.  I have spent years hiding, disguising and re-applying eye brow liner.

I've had many embarrassing moments and have hated the daily ritual of trying to get them looking natural and symetrical.  I am so happy that I do not need to worry any longer about this!  Particulalry as it is now summer!  Just knowing that they will not sweat off and that when I finally go on holiday I can swim and sweat and not worry.

Thank you Aimee (Alopecia Beauty) for putting me forward as a model! Thanks to Claire Hobson and Thea, Kathy the trainer and of course Nouveau contour!

Aimee is currently going through her final training which is such exciting news!  Having an someone who personally has Alopecia working on fellow Alopecia sufferers, will give her that empathetic and unique edge.  She understands the complexities of Alopecia and also has first hand experience having had Semi- Permanent make up for years.

I will keep you all updated with the progress!
